Jun 16, 2016 Help The Perl Conference Help One Orlando

As many of you are aware, a tragic act of terror occurred this past weekend in Orlando, Florida. We are all deeply moved and saddened by this horrific event. Our hearts go out to all of those who have been hurt or suffered loss due to these appalling actions. Our Standards of Conduct clearly state that "we are committed to providing a friendly, safe and welcoming environment for all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, religion, or country of origin." As a community we strive to welcome all, and are deeply troubled by this vicious act of violence.

First and foremost, we would like to assure you that safety of conference attendees, speakers, and volunteers is our paramount priority. While we can never be absolutely certain that The Perl Conference will be accident or incident-free, we would not allow the event to proceed if we had credible evidence that doing so would endanger even a single person.

We would also like to ask for your help in making a special contribution on behalf of The Perl Community to the One Orlando Fund (http://www.oneorlando.org/). We will accept cash donations for the One Orlando Fund throughout the conference. Additionally, we will host a silent auction throughout the week with the proceeds benefitting the One Orlando fund. Please consider donating items of value to be auctioned. Items can be left at Registration by Noon on Monday, or you can contact admin@yapcna.org to make other arrangements.

Setup / Cleanup Crew

On Sunday, we will need volunteers to assist with unboxing materials, placing signs, setting up AV equipment, preparing registration area, and working to make the area aesthetically pleasing. There will be a lot of odd jobs that need to be done.

On Thursday and Friday, we will need to go through everything that is left over, box it, and ship it out.

Room Moderator

The Moderator will be assigned a room for the day (only during breakout sessions). Their responsibility is to introduce each speaker prior to their talk. They work with the Videographer to ensure talks do not start until the videography team is ready to record. They also ensure that their room keeps to the schedule, cuing the speaker to end their talk as necessary. They will provide any special announcements between talks as instructed by the organizer staff.

Videographer

Each room will have a Videographer, who reports to the Videography Team leader. They are responsible for recording the talks in their assigned room (except where the speaker has opted-out of being recorded).

May 27, 2016 Keynote Speaker - Art Eaton

We are pleased to announce keynote speaker, Art Eaton. A Perl developer and Florida native with experiences growing up in a ship yard, Art has an entertaining and useful message for us all. Taken from the viewpoint that all efficient industrial processes are identical at their core, he examines the IT industry from a boat builder's perspective.

This talk is all about running a successful, professional, and happy boatyard where people find value and comfort in their jobs, the quality of work is high, and customers know what they are getting for their money.

...sort of. Art will be applying business experience gained from his marine engineering, medical, military and IT backgrounds to present you with a sea story about project management with which people in all industries can identify.

May 27, 2016 Sponsor Spotlight: cPanel

May 18, 2016 Hotel room update.

TL;DR:

  • Online hotel reservations no longer available. You must call to reserve now.
  • Some people are being told the hotel is "sold out". Depending on your circumstances, this might be incorrect.
  • Rooms with King beds are almost sold out. You may have to ask for a different room type.
  • If you are arriving several days prior to the event or staying several days after the event, the group discount may not be available to you.
  • If you experience problems booking your room, please ask to speak to the Reservations Supervisor

As we get closer to YAPC, some room types on certain nights are nearly sold out. Also, since we only reserve hand full of extra rooms on the days leading up to the event and the days after the event, these tend to become unavailable first (as is the case this year.)

Because of this, the hotel has taken down their online portal for reservations. If you would like to book a room, please call the hotel at 866-247-3571 and request to book your room with group code "16Y".

You may be informed that no rooms are available. If this happens, don't be alarmed. The first thing you might want to do is ask if the dates you want are available with an alternate room type. If you are staying extra days outside of the conference dates, you may also want to ask about which days are unavailable. It's possible the group discount will only be available for a portion of your stay.

You might be told that the group code "expired May 18th". This is incorrect. While typically group codes do expire one month prior to an event, we negotiated special terms with the hotel so that our group code would be valid until June 1st. However, parts of their reservation software are not flexible enough to be aware of our special exception.

If you still experience problems with booking, please ask to speak to the Reservations Supervisor, Erika Winslow and calmly explain your situation. She may have the authority to help you where the regular reservations specialists can not. Additionally, she is aware of our group, while the person that answered the phone may not be. Erika is available Monday through Friday until 4PM (EDT).

We all understand that it can be frustrating when things don't go smoothly when making your travel plans and we truly appreciate you patience. Our goal is to make sure you have a positive experience at this conference, from beginning to end. If there is anything the organizers can do to help you, please feel free to contact admin@yapcna.org.

May 16, 2016 Sponsor Spotlight: craigslist

May 16, 2016 Girl Develop It! Discounts Available

craigslist has generously offered a $100 discount to each of the first 50 attendees from Girl Develop It! who purchase their conference pass with the available discount code. This brings the purchase cost of your pass down to $150. Attendees using the discount code will still be responsible for all other costs of attending (eg; travel, meals, accommodation). May 16, 2016 Keynote Speaker: Larry Wall

Larry Wall developed the Perl interpreter and language while working for System Development Corporation, which later became part of Unisys, finally releasing it in December of 1987. He is the co-author of Programming Perl (often referred to as the Camel Book and published by O'Reilly), which is the definitive resource for Perl programmers, in addition to editing the Perl Cookbook. Fast forward to December 2015, and his continued work with Perl is as evident as ever with the release of the long awaited Perl 6.

Larry’s technical skills are nearly as well known as his quick, shrewd wit, and his dry, sometimes sarcastic, sense humor. Larry will be hosting a Questions and Answers session moderated by Ruth Bavousett. This is the perfect opportunity to learn from the man himself just what was he thinking?

Larry Wall’s presentations are always well received by the Perl community. We are very excited that he is able to attend due to craigslist generously covering his travel expenses. If you have not yet seen this dynamic presenter, you are certainly missing out.

Sponsors interested in sponsoring only YAPC should email treasurer@perlfoundation.org. We are usually able to work things out on a case by case basis depending on your needs. Often, we will pick out a particular aspect of running the conference that matches the sponsors' budget (Wi-fi, Social event, Coffee break, etc... ) and give the sponsor recognition for providing that element of the event.

Any sponsorship amount over $500 entitles the sponsor to a table at our sponsor expo and job fair. One complimentary pass to YAPC is provided for each $1,000 donated. Representatives that are only staying for the job fair do not need to have a pass.

YAPC and “The Perl Conference”

In the late 1990’s, “The Perl Conference” was a conference hosted by O’Reilly Media on the west coast of North America. In 1999, Kevin Lenzo created the “Yet Another Perl Conference” (commonly known as YAPC) as a lower cost alternative for people on the east coast. YAPC was so successful that the “Yet Another Society” was established primarily to administer that conference. Over time, the YAS came to be known as “The Perl Foundation” and took on many more responsibilities.

During that time, “The Perl Conference” came to be known as “OSCON”. Its main focus shifted away from Perl, and started incorporating other topics of general interest to the programming community. For decades we had “OSCON” and “YAPC”, and anyone who has been within the Perl community for a long time knows the difference and what each event is. However, for people new to the Perl community, the term “YAPC” is a bit confusing.

In an effort to appear more welcoming to newcomers, starting in 2016 we will be referring to YAPC::NA as “YAPC” inside the Perl community, but will also be advertising it as “The Perl Conference.” The Perl Foundation thanks O'Reilly Media for granting us permission to use the name and notes that O'Reilly Media is not otherwise affiliated with the event in any way.

Free subscription to Linux Journal Magazine

The Yet Another Society and The Perl Foundation would like to thank Linux Journal Magazine for generously offering a 6 month subscription to all YAPC::NA::2016 attendees. To claim your subscription, you need to opt-in when you purchase your event ticket. If you have already purchased a ticket and would still like to opt-in, you only need to go back to the purchase page and check the appropriate box (http://www.yapcna.org/yn2016/purchase). If you do decide to opt-in, your contact information will be sent to Linux Journal.

Sponsor spotlight: Bluehost

The Perl Foundation is pleased to announce the return sponsorship of Bluehost!

Operating beneath the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, over 700 of us are pushing boundaries to deliver the promise of the internet to more people than ever.

With Google Integration, 24/7 support, and a money back guarantee, it’s no wonder Bluehost is a top rated hosting provider. YAPC::NA is proud to have Bluehost back as a Gold Sponsor for YAPC::NA::2016!

Mar 07, 2016 Keynote Speaker -- Damian Conway

We are pleased to announce that Damian Conway will be a keynote speaker at YAPC::NA::2016! His keynote address will focus on some of the less-heralded features of Perl 5 and Perl 6 which make life so much better, even for beginner Perl programmers. This will be an outstanding presentation for new and experienced programmers alike. Damian is always a highly attended speaker, so don’t miss out on this extraordinary opportunity!

This is not Damian’s first time speaking at YAPC::NA, and we are very excited that he has finally been able to return. He will also be available during much of the “hallway track,” so feel free to walk up and introduce yourself to a truly entertaining and knowledgeable Perl developer; you’ll be happy that you did!

A well-known member of the international Perl community, Damian is a three-time winner of the "Larry Wall Award for Practical Utility". A keynote speaker at many Perl and other Open Source conferences, he's also the author of the books "Object Oriented Perl" and "Perl Best Practices", and co-author of "Perl Hacks". In 2001, Damian received the first Perl Foundation Development Grant and spent 20 months working on community projects for the betterment of Perl.

He is also the author of over 70 CPAN modules, including:

  • Parse::RecDescent and Regexp::Grammars (grammatical parsing tools),
  • Text::Autoformat (intelligent automatic reformatting of plaintext),
  • Lingua::EN::Inflexion and Lingua::EN::Grammarian (better grammar for generated English),
  • Keyword-Declare (add new keywords to Perl), Dios (Perl 6 classes in Perl 5),
  • Dios (Perl 6 classes in Perl 5),
  • Regexp::Debugger (watch your regexes misbehaving), and
  • Quantum::Superpositions (data-parallelism via a quantum mechanical metaphor),

as well as several less-serious tools:

  • Acme::Bleach (programming in whitespace),
  • Coy (programming in haiku), and
  • Lingua::Romana::Perligata (programming in Latin).

Much of his spare time over the past 15 years has been spent assisting Larry Wall in the development of the Perl 6 programming language and producing explanatory documents and presentations exploring Larry's design decisions.

Damian holds a B.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Computer Science and between 2001 and 2010 was also an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Faculty of Information Technology, Monash University, Australia.

A widely sought-after speaker and trainer, Damian currently runs an international IT training company - Thoughtstream - that provides programmer and presenter training from beginner to masterclass level throughout Europe, North America, and Australasia.

Tutorials

In addition to his keynote talk, Damian will also be providing three tutorials during the week. An additional fee is required to attend these classes. Tickets are available now at http://www.yapcna.org.

Will the talks be Live Streamed this year?

This was a difficult decision for us. We know that many aren’t able to attend YAPC::NA but still want to see the talks. We love being able to help serve those members of our community as well as to promote our awesome language. We do not, however, want to do those things to the detriment of those who went to great expense to attend the conference in person. So, unlike recent years, we will not be live streaming all talks to our YouTube channel.

A selection of talks may be streamed live, but which talks those are will not be decided until much closer to the event. Many of the remaining talks will be made available at a later point after the conclusion of YAPC, and some talks will not be streamed at all. The best way to enjoy everything YAPC has to offer is really to be in Orlando, FL during the week of June 19th.

Can I give a talk at YAPC::NA::2016?

Quite possibly, but you’ll need to hurry!

The YAPC::NA::2016 Call for Speakers was released February 8th, with submissions being accepted until March 1st.

To submit a proposal for a talk/presentation, please register your proposed title and an abstract to the YAPC::NA site at http://www.yapcna.org/yn2016/newtalk. Submissions are due before midnight (23:59 EST) on March 1st 2016. Speakers will be notified by the 16th of March. If your proposal is accepted you will be expected to confirm within 48 hours of your notification that you, in fact, will give the talk. If you do not confirm in the given time frame we may, at our discretion, assign your slot to another proposal.

The Call for Master Classes was released February 10th, with submissions being accepted until all, limited, spaces are filled. We expect to announce some of those classes in the first week of March.

Are you an experienced Perl instructor who would like to offer a course at YAPC::NA this year in Orlando? We want to offer the Perl community a selection of courses and tutorials before and after the conference.
